MUIRA PUAMA (Ptychopetalum olacoides)
What is Muira Puama?
Muira Puama (Ptychopetalum olacoides) is a small tree native to the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and other parts of South America. The root and bark are rich in essential fatty acids, plant sterols, including beta-sitosterol, and a novel alkaloid called Muirapuamine.
Historically, all parts of Muira Puama have been used as a tonic for the support of physical capacities--most famously sexual debility and low libido.
Human trials on 2000 healthy male patients using Ptychopetalum olacoides concluded that 63% showed an overall improvement in areas such as erectile dysfunction and low libido.
Ptychopetalum olacoides is equally effective for female sexual health problems, particularly those related to the menopasue.
Constituents of Ptychopetalum olacoides root bark are volatile oils and other compounds such as coumarin, fatty acid esters of sterols, free sterols, uncosanoic, tricosanoic and pentacosanoic acids.
Ptychopetalum olacoides has been shown to have antioxidant effects and antinociceptive (reduces sensitivity to pain stimuli) effects. Other research has demonstrated the anti-fatigue and stress relieving properties of the herb, and beneficial effects on the central nervous system.
Most recently Ptychopetalum olacoides has shown possible benefits to those with memory retrieval problems and revealed other possible benefits to brain fuction in the elderly.
